Wimbledon in Sporting History
Wimbledon in Sporting History was formed to educate and inspire as we embark on a journey through the area’s rich sporting heritage.
The organisation is operated by a team of more than 50 volunteers who have dedicated significant time and resources to safeguarding, curating, and celebrating the incredible legacy forged by Wimbledon’s greatest sporting stars.
Since its establishment, Wimbledon in Sporting History has acquired over £1 million in sporting memorabilia, most of which is proudly displayed at its museum within the grounds of the football club's stadium at Plough Lane.
WiSH is an independent registered charity (number 1195829) and registered museum (number I-112603).
With our dedication to protect our heritage, the mission is always an ever-evolving one.
The new museum, born out of the unprecedented floods in 2024, and additions to the surrounding stadium precinct are testament to what we do, and will keep on doing.
Over the last few years, we have seen the Wombles bench and player statues, which are wonderful bespoke items. The restoration of the Mick the Miller mosaic and Ronnie Moore Speedway statue are super throwback to our past, where we can pay homage to sports that lit up the previous Stadium site. A new home for our Foundation Stone, saved from the old Plough Lane ground.
We now have a memorial bench for fans to remember loved ones passed on Wimbledon Common, Greyhound Parade will be a more welcoming place to stop with further benches adorned by our Womble friends.
And a further nod back to the site's history as we work closely with Wandsworth council to save and preserve the stadium mural on Batsford Way.
Our Club Museum
The new museum, born out of the unprecedented floods in 2024, is a real treasure trove of rare artefacts and displays.
Our collection is ever growing and when we went to press we held 6320 known artefacts recorded with 448 on view in the museum, all managed by our brilliant archivist and curator Sharon Armfield.
You can find the museum in the club shop.
